Notary Services in Thailand Explained

1. Notarial Services in Thailand – No Traditional “Notary Public”

Thailand does not have a traditional Notary Public like in Western countries. Instead:

•Only licensed Thai lawyers, registered with the Lawyers Council of Thailand and who have completed special training, can act as Notarial Services Attorneys (NSAs).

•These lawyers are authorized to perform certain legal certifications and authentications similar to notarial duties.

2. What Can a Notarial Services Attorney (NSA) Do?

An NSA in Thailand can:

Verify signatures and identities of signers.

Certify true copies of documents.

•Administer oaths and affirmations.

•Certify the authenticity of official documents, contracts, or declarations.

•Confirm the legal status or presence of a person (e.g., for affidavits or consent forms).

These services are often required when submitting legal or official documents to foreign authorities, for visa applications, or for use in international business.

3. When You May Need Notarial Services in Thailand

Notarial services are commonly needed for:

Visa and immigration purposes (e.g. affidavits, letters of support, travel consent for minors).

Business and corporate documents (e.g. power of attorney, shareholder resolutions).

Real estate transactions.

Marriage or divorce declarations.

Educational or personal documents for submission abroad (e.g., diplomas, birth certificates).

4. How the Notarization Process Works in Thailand

1.In-person appointment with an NSA (sometimes online for basic verifications).

2.Present a valid passport or Thai ID.

3.The lawyer verifies your identity and the purpose of the document.

4.The NSA signs, seals, and stamps the document with their official notarial seal.

5. Important: Thailand Is Not Part of the Apostille Convention

•Thailand is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention.

•Therefore, notarized documents cannot be apostilled in Thailand.

•For use abroad, they must be legalized by:

•The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

•Sometimes also certified by the relevant foreign embassy in Thailand.

This extra step is often necessary when documents are used in the US, Europe, Australia, etc.

6. Alternative Options

Foreign embassies in Thailand (like the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok) can provide limited notarial services only to their own citizens.

•Many private law firms in Thailand, especially in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and Phuket, offer notarial services via licensed NSAs.

•Prices generally range from 1,500 to 3,000 THB per document.
